Mold is a topic of great interest today as many people suffer from debilitating health conditions like fibromyalgia, autoimmunity, chronic fatigue syndrome and CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome). This could potentially be the result of a water-damaged environment.
You may be surprised, as many patients are, to know the large number of tests that come back showing mold as a root cause of their heart condition. The results allow us to take steps to eliminate this particular risk and move towards a resolution.
What is CIRS?
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a multi-system, multi-symptom illness caused by inhaling inflammagens such as biotoxins. Biotoxins are produced by microorganisms such as mold, bacteria, and actinomycetes found in water-damaged buildings (WDB). CIRS, when caused by water-damaged buildings, is more commonly known as Mold Illness.
Sadly, the complexity of CIRS is often misunderstood. Typically, people who do not have a genetic predisposition to CIRS can recover from exposure to biotoxins. Unfortunately, research has demonstrated that approximately 26% of individuals are susceptible to developing CIRS from exposure to a water-damaged building (WDB). Is this you?
Are You Vulnerable?
Some people are more vulnerable to CIRS than others and this is all based on their genetic make-up. This is a real struggle for many families alike because 1 in 4 are susceptible to CIRS leaving one family member to suffer while others do not.
A person’s immune system will either recognize and react negatively to mold or will not. Some people can be mold sensitive, some can be Lyme sensitive, and some can have multiple sensitivities. What stage a person is in their wellness journey and whether or not they have a particular genetic predisposition will dictate whether or not their body can efficiently clear biotoxins.
Symptoms of CIRS
Symptoms present in clusters and affect many organ systems. It is important to determine if CIRS needs a possible investigation. In order to diagnose CIRS, one should display multiple groups of symptoms that affect different bodily systems. Bloating, constipation, abdominal pain and cramping are potential multiple symptoms but of the same organ system. In contrast, if a person experiences chronic fatigue, icepick pain, brain fog, sinus issues and digestive problems, we would explore the possibility of CIRS.
CIRS Impact on the Heart
Being that CIRS is an inflammatory issue, it can affect every system in the body, including the lungs and the heart. If CIRS is affecting the heart one may expect:
- Shortness of breath, fatigue or weakness
- Tachycardia (fast heartbeat) with exercise
- Cough, wheezing, asthma
- Swelling or edema
- Heart palpitations, heart pounds intermittently
- Increased risk of developing heart conditions including but not limited to AFib, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
Treatment of CIRS involves proper testing, supplements and lifestyle changes. As each step in the treatment of CIRS builds on the previous one, it is mandatory that individual steps be completed before moving forward. The most critical piece is the first, which is the removal of biotoxin exposure. When CIRS develops as a result of exposure to biotoxins in water damaged buildings, either proper remediation or full avoidance is required. Many people do not have the luxury to completely avoid a water damaged home, workplace, school, or car. Therefore, it is suggested that patients contract with an Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP) who has experience with CIRS clientele. A desirable IEP will not only test the indoor air quality appropriately, but will also suggest a thorough remediation, and will outline the instructions in detail.
There are many diets out there but know that the NHD Mold Diet is your go to guide while treating yourself for CIRS. You need to provide your body with nutrient dense foods while removing toxins. Daily Defense is a great supplement that can provide some of these nutrients and support the detox system. Using glutathione is a fantastic way to support detoxification as mold likes to slow down our liver’s ability to efficiently remove mycotoxins. GI Detox taken on an empty stomach is another great way to eliminate toxins including mold. As always, if you have any questions and need one on one support you can schedule a FREE call with one of our health coaches.
