For decades, we’ve been told that saturated fat causes heart disease.
Butter was blamed. Whole milk was blamed. Cheese was blamed. Eggs were blamed. Beef was blamed.
The public was encouraged to replace these traditional foods with low-fat products, vegetable oils, margarine, and highly processed carbohydrates—all in the name of protecting the heart.
I have never accepted that narrative.
As a cardiologist, I’ve spent my career studying the true causes of cardiovascular disease. In my review of the scientific evidence, I do not consider naturally occurring saturated fats from healthy animal foods and whole plant foods to be a root cause of cardiovascular disease. (For more on healthy fats, see olive oil vs. seed oils.)
Instead, heart disease is driven by oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, poor sleep, chronic stress, and a modern lifestyle that is far removed from how humans evolved.
Now, a fascinating nutrient is adding yet another challenge to the long-standing saturated fat story. Researchers are studying pentadecanoic acid, better known as C15:0, a naturally occurring saturated fatty acid found in dairy, ruminant animals, and certain fish.
Surprisingly, instead of finding that higher levels increase cardiovascular risk, researchers have repeatedly observed the opposite. People with higher blood levels of C15:0 consistently appear to have lower rates of coronary heart disease, heart failure, type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction, and even lower overall mortality.
That doesn’t prove C15:0 is a miracle nutrient. But it does remind us that nutrition is far more complex than simply labeling every saturated fat as “bad.”

What Is C15:0?
Pentadecanoic acid (C15:0) is an odd-chain saturated fatty acid containing fifteen carbon atoms. Unlike the more common even-chain saturated fats, C15:0 occurs naturally in relatively small amounts and is found primarily in:
- Whole-fat dairy
- Butter
- Cheese
- Grass-fed beef
- Lamb
- Certain fish
For years, researchers viewed C15:0 as nothing more than a marker of dairy consumption. Then something unexpected happened. Individuals with higher circulating C15:0 consistently demonstrated better health outcomes. That observation launched an entirely new field of research.
What Does the Research Show?
Although randomized clinical outcome trials are still needed, observational studies from multiple populations have produced remarkably consistent findings. Higher blood concentrations of C15:0 have been associated with:
- Lower coronary heart disease risk
- Lower incidence of heart failure
- Better insulin sensitivity
- Lower triglycerides
- Lower prevalence of hypertension
- Lower risk of type 2 diabetes
- Lower all-cause mortality in several cohorts
Studies including EPIC-Norfolk, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and several systematic reviews have all pointed in a similar direction. Consistency across independent populations is one reason researchers are excited.
However, association does not prove causation. Higher C15:0 may simply identify people eating more nutrient-dense traditional foods or living healthier lifestyles. More research is needed before concluding that C15:0 itself is responsible for these benefits.

How Might C15:0 Benefit the Heart?
Scientists are uncovering several fascinating mechanisms.
Supports Mitochondrial Function
Your heart beats over 100,000 times every day. That incredible workload depends on healthy mitochondria—the energy-producing structures inside every heart cell. Laboratory studies suggest C15:0 may improve mitochondrial efficiency while reducing oxidative damage.
Reduces Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress damages arteries, oxidizes LDL particles, impairs nitric oxide production, and contributes to endothelial dysfunction. Experimental research suggests C15:0 may reduce oxidative stress, one of the primary root causes of cardiovascular disease.
Helps Regulate Inflammation
Chronic inflammation accelerates plaque formation and vascular injury. Laboratory studies suggest C15:0 reduces inflammatory signaling while supporting healthier cellular function.
Improves Cell Membranes
Healthy cell membranes are essential for every organ in the body. Researchers believe C15:0 helps stabilize cellular membranes, improving communication between cells and supporting normal cardiovascular function.
Activates Longevity Pathways
C15:0 appears to activate several important metabolic pathways, including:
- AMPK
- PPAR-alpha
- PPAR-delta
These same pathways are associated with improved energy metabolism, healthier mitochondria, better fat utilization, and reduced inflammation.
Could C15:0 Be an Essential Fatty Acid?
Historically, nutrition has recognized only two essential fatty acids:
- Alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3)
- Linoleic acid (Omega-6)
Some investigators now believe C15:0 could become the first newly recognized essential fatty acid in decades. Their reasoning includes:
- Blood levels decline with age.
- Lower levels are associated with multiple chronic diseases.
- Modern diets may provide less C15:0 than traditional diets.
- Supplementation restores circulating levels.
This hypothesis remains under investigation, but it illustrates how rapidly our understanding of nutrition continues to evolve.
What About C15:0 Supplements?
Several C15:0 supplements are now available, with Fatty15 being the best-known. Most provide between 100 and 200 mg of purified pentadecanoic acid daily. Early human studies show supplementation safely increases blood C15:0 levels.
The science is intriguing. However, there is an important distinction every consumer should understand. Most of the excitement surrounding C15:0 comes from observational research. At this time, we do not have large randomized clinical trials demonstrating that C15:0 supplementation reduces:
- Heart attacks
- Stroke
- Cardiovascular death
- Heart failure hospitalization
Those studies are still needed. For that reason, I only recommend eating real food and whole-food supplements like Kickstart My Heart, Wild Salmon Roe, and Australian Emu Oil.
Don’t Chase One Nutrient
Every few years, nutrition discovers a new superstar. Yesterday it was CoQ10. Then NAD+. Then NMN. Then spermidine. Now C15:0.
The problem is that the human body doesn’t thrive because of one molecule. It thrives because thousands of nutrients work together in harmony. Health is built from dietary patterns—not isolated compounds. (This is the same reason I don’t recommend multivitamins.)

My Foundation for Heart Health
If someone asked me where to invest in their health today, I would not start with C15:0 supplements. I would begin by rebuilding the body’s nutritional foundation.
Wild Salmon Roe
If I could recommend just one whole-food supplement for cardiovascular health, it would be Wild Salmon Roe. Wild salmon roe delivers an extraordinary combination of nutrients in their natural form, including:
- DHA and EPA in phospholipid form
- Choline
- Astaxanthin
- Vitamins A and D
- Trace minerals
- Natural antioxidants
- Specialized phospholipids that support healthy cell membranes
Unlike an isolated fatty acid supplement, wild salmon roe provides hundreds of naturally occurring compounds that evolved together to nourish life. Nature almost always creates better nutritional packages than we can. (Compare salmon roe vs. salmon filet.)
Kickstart My Heart
My second foundational recommendation is Kickstart My Heart. Made from freeze-dried, grass-fed and grass-finished bovine heart, liver, kidney, and arteries, it restores nutrients that have largely disappeared from modern diets. Organ meats remain among the most nutrient-dense foods on Earth and naturally provide:
- Bioavailable B vitamins
- Coenzyme Q10
- Zinc
- Copper
- Selenium
- Heme iron
- Fat-soluble vitamins
- Naturally occurring peptides and cofactors that support mitochondrial and cardiovascular function
For thousands of years, our ancestors prized these foods. Today, most people never eat them. Kickstart My Heart makes it easy to reclaim those nutritional advantages.
The 100 Year Heart Method
The goal isn’t to find one miracle nutrient. The goal is to identify and correct the root causes of cardiovascular disease. That is the heart of the 100 Year Heart Method.
The Bottom Line
The research surrounding C15:0 is exciting because it reminds us that nutrition is far more complex than we were once taught. Higher blood levels of this naturally occurring saturated fatty acid have consistently been associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic dysfunction.
Laboratory studies suggest C15:0 may support mitochondrial health, reduce oxidative stress, regulate inflammation, improve cellular membranes, and activate important longevity pathways. Will C15:0 ultimately become a foundational nutrient for heart health? Time and further research will tell.
In the meantime, don’t lose sight of what has worked throughout human history. Eat real food. Choose nutrient-dense animal foods and healthy plant foods. Prioritize seafood. Include organ meats. Reduce your exposure to toxins. Optimize sleep, movement, sunshine, and relationships.
And when you need additional support, build your supplement program on a foundation of Wild Salmon Roe and Kickstart My Heart—two whole-food nutritional powerhouses that provide far more than any single isolated molecule ever could. That’s the philosophy behind the 100 Year Heart Method: identify the root causes, nourish the body with real food, and build a heart designed to last a lifetime.
