If you are currently hospitalized with an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), the placement of a stent is appropriate and often life-saving.
However, if you are being considered for an elective stent procedure — meaning you are not experiencing an active heart attack — it is essential to understand the evidence.
Coronary stents are designed to relieve symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
They do not prevent future heart attacks. This holds true even in the presence of significant arterial blockages.
They do not reduce the risk of death in stable patients.
I know it seems counterintuitive. One would THINK that fixing any blockage is good. But that is not the case as the rest of this article will explain.
Before proceeding with an elective stent, ensure that you have been thoroughly evaluated, that optimal medical therapy (or optimal NATURAL therapy) has been considered, and that you fully understand the risks and benefits.
2007 COURAGE Trial
The landmark 2007 COURAGE Trial forever changed the landscape of cardiology by challenging a long-held belief: that stents improve survival in patients with stable coronary artery disease. In this rigorous, multicenter study of over 2,200 patients, researchers found that adding percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to optimal medical therapy did not reduce the risk of heart attack or death when compared to medical therapy alone. While stents offered modest early relief of angina symptoms, this benefit diminished over time and did not translate into improved long-term outcomes. The COURAGE Trial made it undeniably clear: in stable patients, stents do not prevent heart attacks or save lives — a revelation that underscored the critical importance of lifestyle changes and evidence-based medical management as the true foundation of heart disease treatment.

The 2020 ISCHEMIA Trial delivered a powerful message to the cardiology community: in patients with stable coronary artery disease and moderate-to-severe ischemia, routine stenting or bypass surgery does not reduce the risk of heart attack or death compared to optimal medical therapy alone. This landmark study, involving over 5,000 participants, found that while invasive procedures may offer better symptom relief for those with frequent angina, they do not improve long-term survival or prevent major cardiovascular events. The ISCHEMIA Trial reaffirmed a critical principle in modern cardiology — that for stable patients, lifestyle interventions and medical therapy form the cornerstone of care, and invasive strategies should be reserved for those with debilitating symptoms or high-risk anatomy.

2022 Meta-Analysis of 9 Trials
This study looked at different ways to treat people with stable heart disease, comparing medicine only (medical therapy or MT) with stents (PCI) and heart surgery (CABG). The researchers wanted to see which option worked best to prevent heart attacks, strokes, death from heart disease, needing more procedures, and chest pain (angina).
To make sure the results were fair, they only included people who were not having a recent heart attack or unstable symptoms. This helped make the groups more alike and easier to compare.
Out of the 9 studies they looked at, half were done after the year 2000, so the results included newer treatments and better medicines.
The main finding? There was no major difference between medicine alone and stents or surgery when it came to preventing heart problems or death. Some newer studies showed that stents helped a bit with chest pain, but this wasn’t true in all cases.

A Natural Approach to Coronary Artery Disease: The 100 Year Heart Method
At Natural Heart Doctor, we don’t just treat heart disease — we help people heal and thrive for a lifetime. Our approach to coronary artery disease (CAD) is rooted in the 100 Year Heart Method, a comprehensive strategy to prevent, treat, and even reverse heart disease naturally, without relying on unnecessary drugs or procedures.
We start by identifying the root causes of CAD — inflammation, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiencies, toxins, poor lifestyle habits, and hidden infections. Then, we use our four-step method to build lifelong heart health:
- Thrival Nutrition – We focus on food as medicine, with nutrient-dense, ancestral eating. That means organic vegetables, pasture-raised meats, wild seafood, and healthy fats — while eliminating processed, inflammatory foods.
- Thrival Lifestyle – Movement, restorative sleep, daily sunshine, grounding, chiropractic care, and toxin avoidance are essential for reversing heart disease naturally.
- Thrival Biohacking – We integrate advanced tools like red light therapy, sauna, cold exposure, and targeted supplements to accelerate healing and support vascular health.
- Thrival UltraDiagnostics – We use cutting-edge testing to go far beyond standard cardiology labs. From advanced cholesterol and inflammation panels to oxidative stress, nutrient levels, and hidden infection screening — we uncover the full picture.
Instead of jumping to stents or statins, we ask why the arteries became blocked in the first place — and then we fix it. Our goal is simple: help you live a life free of heart disease… and full of energy, purpose, and longevity.
