Have you ever wondered why it’s hard to lose weight, even though you are eating well and exercising? Well, it’s not just about eating less or exercising more. There’s something else going on in your body involving toxins and fat, and it’s pretty interesting.
A recent patient named Sheila represents the typical situation. Despite years of trying various diets and going to the gym 3 days a week, she still was overweight. One doctor recommended gastric banding. Another suggested Ozempic, the semaglutide drug that everyone is talking about.
But Sheila saw me because of high blood pressure, but also confided that she wouldn’t mind losing the extra 30 pounds. And what I told her next astounded her.
I told her that she could never lose the weight unless she reduced her toxin burden. And more and more medical professionals agree, as seen in this 2017 article.
What are Toxins?
First, let’s talk about toxins. Toxins are the bad guys that harm your body. The chemicals in cigarettes would be an obvious example, as would pesticides like glyphosate. But there are many more toxins from mold mycotoxins to plastics, and metals to parabens. In short, there are millions of these toxins in our world.
Your body wants to protect you from these toxins, so it has a smart way of dealing with them.
Instead of letting these toxins float around and cause trouble, your body hides them away in your fat cells. Fat cells are like little storage units where your body can safely keep things it doesn’t want. This is great for keeping the toxins away from important parts of your body like your brain, heart, liver and muscles, which are busy doing other things.
But, here’s where it gets tricky. When your body is holding onto these toxins in your fat cells, it doesn’t want to let go of the fat. It’s like your body thinks, “If I lose this fat, I’ll let out the toxins, and that could be bad.” So, your body holds onto the fat extra tight, which can make losing weight harder.
Also, when you do start to lose weight and burn off some of that fat, the toxins get released back into your body. Your body might not like this and might try to slow down the weight loss to keep the toxins from coming out too fast.
What to Do About Toxins?
Toxins are all around us and so you may think that there is nothing you can do. Don’t give up. And when you avoid the toxins, the weight is going to come off.
Follow our method of Eat Well- selecting only organic vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood. Make sure your home is free of water damage, thus avoiding mold and bacterial toxins. Get an air purifier. Avoid pesticides, plastics, cheap metal cookware etc. In short, everything you bring into your house, consider if it’s natural or poison.
If poison, don’t bring it into your house. From laundry products to personal care items, and cleaning supplies to paint/flooring.
Binders help
Various supplements can help with the detoxification process including glutathione boosters and binders. My favorite product for this is our Daily Defense which contains liver cleansers and gut binders. Bind up the toxins and poop them out.
Biohacking strategies such as sauna and IV therapy should also be considered.
