Meat sourcing: Take the good and leave the bad

You are what you eat…

Not all protein is created equal. You may already know that organic produce provides more nutrients than their conventional counterparts.

This is due to the soil they are grown from- the plants can’t make something out of nothing.

Likewise, animal products’ nutrient content is a direct result of the way they’ve been raised.

A diet of grains provides animals with little in the way of vitamins and minerals and is typically contaminated with pesticides and many other toxins. When animals are allowed to roam freely and have a diet with diverse grasses and other vegetation, they can grow healthily into arguably a completely different end product.

Grass fed beef provides roughly 3-6x the amount of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids like CLA, which is beneficial for improving cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease than conventionally raised cattle. The fat content in the meat is lower overall and is often seen to have a completely different color due to the presence of omega 3s and antioxidants.

The same has been found for organic, pasture raised chicken.

Ethical treatment and Environment

There is a widespread ethical argument for veganism/vegetarian lifestyles stating that the production of cows for beef is destroying our environment. The evolving counter-argument is that it’s not the cow, it’s the how.

Confined Animal Feeding Operations- or CAFO’s for short are bad for the animals, harmful to our environment and toxic to our health as well. These animals are treated inhumanely in compact conditions that are a breeding ground for disease, poor health and non- sustainable practices. Antibiotics, low quality feed, hormones to increase growth – all end up in OUR bodies upon consumption.

The drugs used by such farming practices are leading to antibiotic resistant superbugs and a myriad of hormone abnormalities including early menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and infertility.

The truth is, that there are animals being raised humanely on quality feed that are not pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics to counteract disease-fueling surroundings.

Unfortunately these are not the products which are widely available at your local supermarket. When shopping at the meat department in your standard grocery store, you might be able to find some grass fed beef, organic chicken or wild caught seafood but you’d spend top dollar to get it and still not be able to identify where the product was sourced from.

For this reason, I’ve tried my best to get to a weekly farmers market. I love to support the guys out there who are doing good honest work, providing nutrient dense food and allowing us as consumers a connection to our food. Unfortunately, not all have this option. Plus, major market goers, like myself, frequently find that supply is quite limited or already picked over.

In addition to the limited availability of sustainably farmed meat and poultry, the pandemic, employment difficulties and recent cyber-attacks negatively affecting meat supply, access to ethically raised nutrient dense meat choices is more difficult than ever. Fortunately, there are farmers out there who continue to use best practices – so how do we get it?
