Jardiance is a brand name for empagliflozin, a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
Maybe you have seen commercials like this one for Jardiance.
How it Works
Jardiance decreases the reabsorption of glucose by the kidneys, thus increasing glucose excreted through the urine.
Obviously, this does not fix the problem. The drug does not address why people have elevated blood sugar.
Here are some key points about Jardiance:
- Mechanism of Action: Jardiance works by inhibiting SGLT2, a protein responsible for reabsorbing glucose in the kidneys. By blocking this protein, the medication promotes the excretion of glucose in the urine, thus lowering blood glucose levels.
- Indications: Jardiance is primarily used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is often prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes diet, exercise, and other antidiabetic medications.
- Side Effects: Like any medication, Jardiance may cause side effects. Common side effects include urinary tract infections, increased urination, and genital yeast infections. Dehydration and a possible drop in blood pressure may also occur. Additionally, Jardiance has been associated with an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition that can lead to coma or death if not treated promptly.
Key findings from the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial include:
- Reduction in Cardiovascular Events: The study demonstrated a significant reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack (myocardial infarction), and nonfatal stroke, in people with type 2 diabetes who were at high risk for cardiovascular events.
- Cardiovascular Death: Jardiance was associated with a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular death. This is particularly noteworthy as cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes.
- Heart Failure Benefits: The trial also indicated a reduction in hospitalization for heart failure among participants taking Jardiance.
Don’t Be Fooled
Just because your blood sugar is better on pharma does NOT mean you have the same risk as those people with normal blood sugar WITHOUT pharma.
With pharma, controlled or not, you are not at the same risk of heart attack, stroke and dying. Not even close.
I know that’s not what your doctor tells you, but it is true.
The same is true for blood pressure drugs and cholesterol drugs.
