You have a heart. You have lungs. You have a liver. You have kidneys. And you have known this since you were a child. But there is one part of the anatomy story you likely have NOT heard about. And it is VERY important. So please read on.
The endothelium is a critical yet often overlooked part of the cardiovascular system. Comprising a thin layer of cells that line the interior surfaces of blood vessels, the endothelium plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular health, regulating blood flow, and ensuring that the circulatory system functions efficiently. Given its essential functions, understanding the endothelium and how to protect it can be vital to long-term heart health.
What is the Endothelium?
The endothelium is a monolayer of endothelial cells that lines the inside of the entire vascular system, from the heart and arteries to the tiniest capillaries. These cells act as a barrier between the blood and the rest of the vessel wall, performing various roles essential to vascular health.
One of the key functions of the endothelium is to regulate vascular tone. It does this by producing and releasing various substances, including nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator that helps relax blood vessels, allowing for better blood flow and reduced blood pressure. The endothelium also produces endothelin, a vasoconstrictor that tightens blood vessels when necessary. The delicate balance between these substances ensures that blood flow is regulated according to the body’s needs.
The Role of the Endothelium in Cardiovascular Health
The health of the endothelium is directly linked to overall cardiovascular health. A well-functioning endothelium prevents atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaques in the arteries that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. When the endothelium is healthy, it resists the adhesion of inflammatory cells and platelets, which are critical in preventing the formation of clots that can obstruct blood flow.
However, when the endothelium becomes dysfunctional—a condition known as endothelial dysfunction—it loses its ability to regulate blood vessel tone, control inflammation, and prevent clot formation. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the earliest signs of atherosclerosis and is associated with various cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, and peripheral artery disease.
I call this “leaky” endothelium or part of the Leaky Heart Syndrome when physiologic/anatomical barriers leak, or become overly permeable.
Factors Affecting Endothelial Health
When looking at all things health related, we use the 100 Year Heart Method. So violations of this method, Thrival Nutrition and Thrival Lifestyle, lead to endothelial dysfunction and leaky blood vessels.
Thrival Nutrition: Give the body the food it needs and avoid what it does not. Ethically raised and sourced animals and seafood are essential for blood vessel health. Organic, unprocessed plant foods also standout in this area. Seaweed has unique properties to support (see Arterosil below). Processed foods, especially grains, along with artificial ingredients lead to endothelial problems. Pesticides will poison the barrier.
Thrival Lifestyle: Sleep, sun, activity, AND toxin avoidance are very important for blood vessel health. Mold, bacteria, plastic, and thousands of other chemicals destroy the endothelial layer. Take care of your teeth with a holistic dentist. See your chiropractor too.
Part of the Thrival Lifestyle is the Thrival Mindset. Finding your happy with good relationships, spirituality, self-acceptance and gratitude is paramount for blood vessel health.
Supplements that Support the Endothelium
Based on what I said above, let me give you my top 5 supplements for endothelial health:
