Glass of Raw Milk

Humans have been drinking their mother’s milk since the dawn of our existence. All mammals, ranging from cows to giraffes, monkeys to whales, directly drink their mother’s milk from the breast. This milk is in its raw state, containing living bacteria, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and digestive enzymes, all in what nature deems the perfect form.

However, it wasn’t until a few thousand years ago, with the domestication of animals, that our ancestors started drinking the milk of other animals. In essence, dairy is not a Paleo food.

Fast forward to modern times, society has been encouraged to consume milk for over 100 years. Slogans like “Milk does the body good” and the “milk mustache” became a part of the 20th-century narrative. The milk referred to in this part of the story undergoes pasteurization, a process of heating to a temperature that kills off bacteria. This method became popular in the early 20th century as big city animal slaughterhouses contributed to the prevalence of sick animals and contaminated milk.

In the field of nutrition and wellness, the debate between raw and pasteurized milk is one that stirs considerable passion and interest. Proponents of raw milk argue that it offers superior health benefits, a richer flavor profile, and a closer connection to the natural source of our food. But what sets raw milk apart from its pasteurized counterpart, and why should consumers consider making the switch?

Raw milk products are, simply put, milk products that have not undergone the process of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a method developed in the 19th century to kill potentially harmful bacteria by heating the milk to a specific temperature for a set period.

Raw milk enthusiasts argue that pasteurization diminishes the nutritional content of milk, including essential enzymes, vitamins, and beneficial bacteria that are crucial for digestive health. Raw milk, on the other hand, is said to retain its full complement of nutrients, including vitamins A, B, and C, along with minerals like calcium and phosphorus, in their most bioavailable forms.

Raw Milk is Heart Healthy

Supporters of raw milk consumption highlight several health benefits, including improved digestion, stronger immunity, and reduced allergies. The presence of natural enzymes in raw milk, particularly lactase, assists in the digestion of lactose, making raw milk products more digestible for many individuals. Furthermore, the beneficial bacteria found in raw milk can contribute to a healthier gut microbiome, which is foundational for overall immune system function.

Raw milk consumption is linked to a lower risk of allergies, asthma, eczema and other diseases. Dozens of studies confirm this and the list of other studies can be found here. Given the fact that people with these conditions have a higher risk of heart disease, it stands to reason that raw milk consumption should lead to a lower risk of heart disease. I believe this to be true when compared to pasteurized milk.

Do we NEED milk products for health? No. If we drink milk, should it be raw? Yes. In the least, all milk must be organic.

Sourcing Quality Raw Milk for Heart Health

When choosing raw milk, the quality of the source is paramount. Here’s what to look for in a quality raw milk producer:

1. Transparency and Openness: Reputable producers are transparent about their farming practices, animal health, and milk production processes. They should welcome questions and visits from consumers.

2. Grass-fed, Pasture-raised Animals: The best quality milk comes from animals that graze on natural, pesticide-free pastures. Grass-fed cows produce milk with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins.

3. Hygienic Production Practices: Good producers adhere to strict cleanliness standards in milking and handling raw milk to ensure safety and quality.

4. Regular Testing: Responsible farmers regularly test their milk for pathogens, ensuring that their products are safe for consumption.

Glass vs. Plastic Packaging in Milk for Heart Health

Choosing raw milk in glass bottles over plastic is more than a nod to tradition; it’s a health-conscious decision. Glass is inert, meaning it does not leach chemicals into the milk, preserving the purity and taste of the product. Additionally, glass is sustainable and recyclable, aligning with the environmental ethos of many raw milk consumers.

Knowing Your Raw Milk Farmer for Heart Health

Establishing a relationship with your milk farmer provides several benefits. It allows you to understand their farming practices, ensuring the animals are treated humanely and the farm operates sustainably. Knowing your farmer also means you can trust the source of your milk, providing peace of mind about the quality and safety of the products you consume.

Freedom to Drink Raw Milk for Heart Health

The government departments of health typically try to control the raw dairy industry. I recently testified as a medical expert regarding the benefits of raw milk and raw dairy. Whether you believe in raw dairy or not, it should be a personal decision whether or not you can drink it. Informed consent is obtained from most raw dairy producers. So again, freedom of choice over our food is critical. Candidly, you may be against raw dairy. But what if you disagree with the government next time, but have already ceded your rights over food to the government?

You do you and I do me. You want to drink poison? Up to you. You want to swallow poison pharma or inject the poison directly? Up to you.

Conclusion about Raw Milk and Heart Health

The choice to consume raw milk is a personal one, influenced by a variety of factors including health considerations, taste preferences, and environmental concerns. For those who choose to embrace raw milk, the benefits are multifaceted, ranging from nutritional advantages to supporting sustainable agricultural practices. As with any food choice, informed decision-making, coupled with a commitment to sourcing from reputable producers, is key to ensuring the best outcomes for health and well-being.

About Dr. Lauren Lattanza NMD, FACC

Dr. Lattanza Office Visit with Patient

As a Naturopathic Physician, I am trained to treat the whole person and get to the root cause of disease.

I went to Arizona State University where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a depth in physiology and minor in Spanish. After my undergraduate degree I was working on prerequisite classes towards medical school, which is when I came to learn that my values identified best with the principles of naturopathic medicine. I knew that I wanted to help patients identify the causes of disease and be able to offer treatments which would improve their health rather than simply treating symptoms.

I dedicated the next 4 years to the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona where I attained my Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine. I served as Class President all 4 years, Board of Trustees – Student Trustee, spoke as the Club President for our branch of Toastmasters, and was voted by my peers and attending physicians to earn the Outstanding Leadership Award for the Class of 2020. Throughout medical school I took it upon myself to work alongside MDs, DOs, chiropractors, and functional medicine practitioners in addition to naturopathic physicians.

As a Spanish speaking student, I was able to volunteer with community clinics around Phoenix and provide free healthcare to low-income families. Due to this combined exposure, I came to find my passion in treating cardiometabolic and digestive disorders that are all too common, yet largely preventable. I took the opportunity to learn the broad spectrum of healthcare so I can ensure that I am able to provide my patients with the best options.
