In the fast-paced world we live in, energy drinks have become a popular go-to solution for those looking to boost their stamina and mental alertness. However, beneath the promise of instant energy, these beverages harbor potential dangers to your heart and can affect both physical and mental health. Understanding the ingredients in energy drinks and their impacts to heart health and more is crucial to making informed choices about consumption.

It’s not just an adult problem. Many serious heart issues related to energy drinks are seen in children as well. Energy drinks should not be consumed by anyone under 18. Red Bull and Monster are OUT.

Dangerous Ingredients of Energy Drinks and Your Heart

The primary components of energy drinks that affect your heart are caffeine, sugar, and other “energy-boosting” compounds like taurine, guarana, and B-vitamins. While these ingredients can temporarily increase alertness and energy levels, they also pose risks, particularly when consumed in large amounts.

Caffeine: A common stimulant found in energy drinks, caffeine can lead to symptoms, but hardly is dangerous. Except when high dose and quickly consumed. Caffeine in coffee is not a problem and it is natural. These products have ADDED caffeine. Be careful.

Sugar: The high sugar content in energy drinks can lead to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic syndromes. The quick surge of sugar also leads to a crash in energy levels, negating the supposed benefits of these drinks.

Artificial Additives: Many energy drinks contain artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives that can have unknown long-term health effects.

Synthetic B vitamins: Not natural and not a good source of nutrients.

Cardiovascular Risks of Energy Drinks

Several studies have shown an increase in heart rate and arterial blood pressure after energy drink consumption. In addition, significant cardiac manifestations such as ventricular arrhythmias, ST segment elevation and QT prolongation have been documented following energy drink overconsumption. Additionally, atrial fibrillation has been reported after high energy drinks ingestion in two healthy boys, 14 and 16 years of age. Recently, energy drink consumption has been related to myocardial infarction in healthy 17-and 19-year-old boys.

Consuming energy drinks reduces endothelial function and stimulates platelet activity through arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation in healthy young adults. Recent reports have demonstrated a relationship between energy drink overconsumption and arterial dilatation, aneurysm formation, dissection and rupture of large arteries.

Mental Health Concerns and Energy Drinks

Aside from physical health risks, energy drinks can adversely affect mental health. The high levels of caffeine can lead to increased anxiety, stress, and in some cases, panic attacks. The dependency on these drinks for energy can also disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia and reduced sleep quality, which are critical factors in overall mental well-being.

The artificial ingredients and synthetic vitamins are also major factors linked to emotional unwellness.

The Sugar Problem Of Energy Drinks to Your Heart

The excessive sugar content in energy drinks not only poses a risk to physical health but also contributes to the cycle of energy peaks and crashes. This rollercoaster of energy levels can lead to dependence on energy drinks to function normally throughout the day, creating a vicious cycle that is hard to break. This high level of sugar likely leads to dental issues as well.

Organic Alternatives to Energy Drinks that are Good for Your Heart

For those looking for healthier ways to boost energy levels, there are several organic alternatives:

1. Green Tea: Offers a natural source of caffeine along with antioxidants.

2. Coconut Water: A great hydration option with natural electrolytes.

3. Kombucha: A fermented tea that provides a natural energy boost along with probiotics for gut health.

4. Water with Lemon and Honey: A simple, refreshing drink that can help increase energy without caffeine.

5. Herbal Teas: Such as ginseng or peppermint, can invigorate the body without the adverse effects of caffeine.

6. Organic coffee: Check out our Cardiology Coffee here

Here are some other brands sold on Amazon you should look into:

  1. Sambazon
  2. Guru
  3. Yerba Mate

Beware that these have added caffeine, but are cleaner than Red Bull and Monster.

In conclusion, while energy drinks may offer a quick fix to fatigue, the potential risks they pose to cardiovascular and mental health, along with the dangers of high sugar content, make it essential to consider healthier alternatives. Opting for organic beverages can provide a safer, more sustainable source of energy that supports overall well-being.

About Dr. Lauren Lattanza NMD, FACC

Dr. Lattanza Office Visit with Patient

As a Naturopathic Physician, I am trained to treat the whole person and get to the root cause of disease.

I went to Arizona State University where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a depth in physiology and minor in Spanish. After my undergraduate degree I was working on prerequisite classes towards medical school, which is when I came to learn that my values identified best with the principles of naturopathic medicine. I knew that I wanted to help patients identify the causes of disease and be able to offer treatments which would improve their health rather than simply treating symptoms.

I dedicated the next 4 years to the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona where I attained my Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine. I served as Class President all 4 years, Board of Trustees – Student Trustee, spoke as the Club President for our branch of Toastmasters, and was voted by my peers and attending physicians to earn the Outstanding Leadership Award for the Class of 2020. Throughout medical school I took it upon myself to work alongside MDs, DOs, chiropractors, and functional medicine practitioners in addition to naturopathic physicians.

As a Spanish speaking student, I was able to volunteer with community clinics around Phoenix and provide free healthcare to low-income families. Due to this combined exposure, I came to find my passion in treating cardiometabolic and digestive disorders that are all too common, yet largely preventable. I took the opportunity to learn the broad spectrum of healthcare so I can ensure that I am able to provide my patients with the best options.
