We get a lot of questions about natural ways to keep blood “thin”. This can be handy if you want to prevent heart attacks, strokes, clots related to AFIB, DVT and more.
Our 100 Year Heart Method is the foundation: Thrival Nutrition, Thrival Lifestyle, Thrival Mindset, Thrival UltraDiagnostics and Thrival BioHacking.
And biohacks include supplements like Nattokinase.
What is Nattokinase?
Nattokinase is a potent enzyme derived from natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. This enzyme has gained significant attention for its potential health benefits, particularly in supporting cardiovascular health. Nattokinase works by breaking down fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting, which helps to improve blood flow and reduce the risk of clots.
Nattokinase was discovered by Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi in 1980. While studying the effects of various natural substances on blood clots, Dr. Sumi found that natto exhibited a remarkable ability to dissolve fibrin. This led to the identification and isolation of nattokinase, the enzyme responsible for natto’s clot-dissolving properties.
How is Nattokinase Made?
Nattokinase is produced during the fermentation process of natto. Soybeans are first soaked and steamed, then fermented with the bacterium *Bacillus subtilis natto*. This fermentation process not only imparts natto’s characteristic flavor and texture but also results in the production of nattokinase. The enzyme can then be extracted and purified for use in dietary supplements.
Studied Health Benefits of Nattokinase
1. **Cardiovascular Health:** Nattokinase is primarily celebrated for its cardiovascular benefits. By breaking down fibrin, it helps to maintain healthy blood viscosity and prevents the formation of abnormal blood clots. This can reduce the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attacks, and strokes.
2. **Blood Pressure Regulation:** Some studies suggest that nattokinase may help to lower blood pressure by improving blood flow and reducing arterial stiffness. This makes it a potential natural remedy for hypertension.
3. **Enhanced Circulation:** Improved blood flow can benefit various aspects of health, including better oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues and organs, which may enhance overall vitality and energy levels.
Potential Risks and Considerations
While nattokinase is generally considered safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with bleeding disorders, those taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, or those scheduled for surgery should consult a healthcare provider before taking nattokinase, as it may increase the risk of bleeding. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also seek medical advice prior to use.
How to Take Nattokinase
Nattokinase supplements are typically available in capsule or tablet form. The recommended dosage can vary, but a common dosage is around 100 mg 2x per day, providing approximately 2,000 fibrinolytic units (FU) of activity.
It is often advised to take nattokinase on an empty stomach for optimal absorption and effectiveness. We call it the “nightstand supplement” as you would take it just before bed and right after you wake up. The key is to take away from meals, but taking nattokinase with other supplements is not a problem.
Combining Nattokinase with Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase, another enzyme with notable health benefits, is often paired with nattokinase. Serrapeptase, derived from the Serratia bacteria found in the intestines of silkworms, is known for its anti-inflammatory and proteolytic (protein-dissolving) properties. It is used to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling, and to support the breakdown of non-living tissues such as scar tissue, mucus, and blood clots.
Combining nattokinase with serrapeptase can offer a synergistic effect, particularly for cardiovascular health and inflammation reduction. The duo can enhance the body’s natural ability to dissolve fibrin and reduce arterial plaque, thus promoting better circulation and overall vascular health.
