A major complaint of many people is leg swelling. I have seen hundreds of people in my career with this issue.

Sometimes it is serious, often it is not.

The job of the doctor is to determine where the swelling is coming from.

And then help fix the problem, preferably without pharmaceuticals.

What Causes Swollen Legs?

There are a variety of causes of swollen legs. Doctors call the swelling edema.

Some of the main causes of edema include:

  1. Venous insufficiency: This is the most common cause. The veins of the legs do not work properly. Instead of constantly propelling blood back to the heart, fluid collects in the legs. When the person awakens from sleep, the legs are often normal in size. But as the day progresses with plenty of sitting, standing and other stationary activities, fluid collects and the legs swell. Venous insufficiency responds well to knee-high compression stockings and leg elevation.
  2. Heart Failure: Edema is one sign of heart failure along with shortness of breath and abdominal bloating. A good physical examination and an echocardiogram of the heart confirm the diagnosis. This edema tends to persist overnight and most people do not sleep well if fluid overloaded from heart failure.
  3. DVT: Deep venous thrombosis can lead to edema, but this is typically involving only one leg. This is also a painful edematous condition.
  4. Injury and infection: Usually a history of injury or obvious infected area will lead to this diagnosis.
  5. Liver and kidney disease: Confirmed by blood testing.
  6. Pharma side effects: From a cardiology standpoint, calcium channel blockers like amlodipine and nifedipine are the most common offenders. Symptoms resolve when you stop the drug (on the advice of your doctor).
