For decades, the medical narrative has been simple: if you have high blood pressure, take pharmaceuticals to lower it and you’ll live longer, healthier, and with fewer heart attacks and strokes. But a landmark study published in Hypertension (2019) paints a much more troubling picture—especially for those who believe simply “getting your numbers down” with medications is good enough.
The Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study followed over 3,500 people with no prior cardiovascular disease for more than 13 years. Participants were grouped by blood pressure status and medication use:
- Normotensive without medication
- Normotensive with medication
- Hypertensive without medication
- Hypertensive with medication
The shocking result? People with “controlled” blood pressure on drugs had some of the worst outcomes. See the GREEN line below.

Medicated but Still at Risk
Those with normal blood pressure achieved through medication had a 2.2 times higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who maintained normal blood pressure without drugs. Their risk of stroke increased by 2.3 times, and coronary events doubled.
Even more concerning, when the researchers followed people who developed hypertension during the study and were treated successfully with meds, the same pattern emerged. Despite reaching target numbers, they still faced a higher stroke and cardiovascular risk than people who never needed meds at all.
In fact, the group with the highest risk across the board were those taking drugs yet still hypertensive—proof that controlling symptoms is not the same as fixing the root cause.
Controlled Doesn’t Mean Healthy
Why are medicated individuals—despite hitting the “magic numbers” of <140/90 mmHg—still facing elevated risk?
Researchers suggest two key factors:
- Underlying Damage Is Already Done
By the time many are diagnosed with high blood pressure and start medication, years or decades of silent damage have already occurred—arterial stiffening, inflammation, and calcification. Lowering the number on a blood pressure cuff doesn’t undo this damage. - Drug Side Effects and Nutrient Depletion
Blood pressure drugs can deplete nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and vitamin K2, which is essential for preventing calcium buildup in arteries. This may explain why medicated individuals had higher coronary artery calcification (CAC) levels at baseline and more frequent rapid progression of CAC—despite taking their meds.
What This Study Really Tells Us
This wasn’t a study of irresponsible patients or untreated hypertension. These were people following the rules. Taking their medications. Achieving “normal” blood pressure. And yet—they got sick and died at higher rates.
The lowest risk group? Those with naturally normal blood pressure, no meds required.
That’s the goal we should aim for. Not just controlling the symptom (high BP), but healing the system.
Real Solutions Come From Lifestyle
So how do we truly fix blood pressure—without trading one risk for another?
- Clean up your nutrition: Focus on an organic, Paleo-style diet rich in potassium, magnesium, and healthy fats.
- Move daily: Physical activity improves endothelial function and reduces systemic inflammation.
- Prioritize sleep and stress reduction: These are critical for nervous system regulation and long-term BP control.
- Get sun exposure: Natural sunlight boosts nitric oxide and vitamin D, both key to vascular health.
- Test, don’t guess: Look at your real risk through advanced labs—oxidative stress, inflammation, and calcification—not just a BP reading in a clinic.
Supplements can help too. We have a whole protocol for you, but many people start with our Nitric Oxide Booster combo.
Final Thoughts
Pharmaceuticals may lower your blood pressure reading—but this study shows they don’t erase the risk, and in many cases, they reflect a deeper level of illness. The most empowered path isn’t waiting for disease and medicating the symptoms—it’s preventing the disease in the first place.
The truth is clear: the people with the best outcomes were those who never needed meds at all. Let’s help more people join that group.
